The race
JuneTeenth Atlanta 5K was birthed to encourage us to reflect upon and honor June 19, 1865 as a significant day in American History, while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Use this day to reflect on the perseverance of African Americans against racism and inequality, to recognize the significant contributions from people of African heritage, and to cultivate a knowledge and appreciation of African American culture!Let this be a day of remembrance of past struggles for freedom and the continued fight for independence.Let’s join in solidarity to complete the JuneTeenth Atlanta 5k run/walk in person or vitrually. #JuneTeenthATL5K #EmancipationCelebration
Meet Wonda X. Reeves
Founder of Juneteenth ATL 5K
I was born in Albany, Georgia and moved to the metro Atlanta area in 1985. I have two daughters, Arika and Genesis, and a plethora of friends and family who support my efforts to incorporate a little fitness into our weekly routines! I completed my first 5k in 2010 (for Lung Cancer) in honor of my late dad, Earnest "BoBo" Reeves. Since then, I have completed countless races, and I continue to enjoy the fellowship of friends/family while getting a little exercise in the process!
JuneTeenth Atlanta 5K was created to promote good health as well as to bring awareness to the importance of June 19, 1865. As we complete the race to commemorate the end of slavery in the US, let us remember to honor the achievements of African Americans and create change by passing Juneteenth facts along to others; each one, teach one. Lastly, take actionable steps that will help achieve the ultimate goal of true emancipation.
